Think about the terms “help” and rescue.” What is the difference between these
two terms? In the context of the Holocaust, how do you understand the difference between these two terms? Can you think of a specific time when help was needed rather than rescue, and of times when Jews needed to be rescued? Would you characterize those individuals who helped Jews as heroes? Why or why not? Would you characterize those who rescued Jews as heroes? Why or why not? (Echoes and Reflections)
The difference between these two words is that helping someone means to make something easier, or to assist. Rescuing means to free them from the problem altogether.
Relating to to the Holocaust, there were few people who actually rescued Jews and more that just helped the Jews. Helping Jews was things like giving the Jews food or water, and rescuing them could be hiding them, or helping them out of the country with forged papers. Anne Frank was rescued, she was hidden in the ¨Secret Annexe¨. Raoul Wallenberg arrived in Budapest, Hungary in 1944 and was dedicated to helping the Jews. He gave out official papers to thousands of Jews. He rescued many Jewish lives. Oskar Schindler was a member of the Nazi party. It became his goal to help Jews escape the gas chamber. He rescued 1,200 Jews. Helping a Jew is just as heroic as rescuing them. Caring enough to do something for them is enough.
I agree helping is someone making things easier for you to do. Like when you ask someone for help on homework. They don't sit there and finish your homework for you. They tell you how to do the problem then you learn and do it for yourself. Rescuing is like making the problem go away. If someone rescues you from falling they made the problem of having you fall go away and if they help you then the problem happened of you falling and they are there to help you get up. In the holocaust if people helped the jews they were giving them food or giving them clothes, but they didn't prevent from the nazis capturing the jews. If you rescued someone then you went and hid a person from the nazis like in Anne Frank she was rescued from the nazis and lived in an attic. So there are differences in the meanings rescue and help. Many people in the holocaust wanted to be rescued but all they could get is help.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there is a difference between "helping" and "rescuing". Helping is more of a showing someone how to do something an helping them get it, or for example if someone is carrying a heavy box your going to try to help them by lending them a hand. Rescuing is more of a saving someone from a certain situation, For example if a person was stuck in a fire, a fire fighter would come and rescue them. Relating to the holocaust the people who helped the Jews in my opinion were considered hero because they saved their life's. Without their help the Jews would of probably been dead. So they were considered heroes because heroes are people who help and rescue people from certain situations and it makes bigger heroes to save people from death situations.
ReplyDeleteI agree, because there is a difference between "help" and "rescue". Helping is like giving people something, for example giving money to the homeless. Rescuing is like saving someone, for example saving someone that is stranded on an island. Relating this to the Holocaust there was mostly help in my eyes. In the Holocaust the people who helped Anne Frank and her family, and many other Jewish people and their families are considered heroes in my eyes. I think this because there were only certain people who helped the Jews because others were to scared and didn't want to help them. So I do agree 100% with what you have to say.
