Giving up

¨I have now reached the stage that I don't care much whether I live or die. The world will still keep on turning without me; what is going to happen, will happen, and anyway it’s no good trying to resist.¨ -The Diary of Anne Frank, p. 150

To me, this quote shows exactly how Anne feels. She has given up altogether. She doesn't wanna fight anymore, she doesn't wanna try anymore. She's reached her breaking point. Anne and her family were having a conversation about what's been happening around the world, they talked about how millions of innocent people had just been murdered. Anne realized how things have escalated and that there's nothing she can really do so there's no use in fighting back. Anne knows there's nothing she can do to help herself, or others in need so theres no point in even trying. I disagree with Anne´s quote because I think that there's always a reason to try and fight back no matter how bad the situation is.

This quote relates to being hopeless. Anne gave up hope - living and dying is all the same to her. In the Holocaust, many Jews had the same feelings.  They couldn't take it anymore and just stopped caring. They became hopeless. Many Jews chose to take their own lives when they felt this way, some thought this was resistance. When you've been through so much, theres just so much more that you can take. They feel like no matter what they do, things are going to continue to get worse. Is there a reason to continue fighting?

  1. I really like the quote you picked. i think it summarizes not only what Anne feels but all the Jews as well, and maybe even everyone else that is trying to help the Jews. They're in the part of the story when they think everything is lost. She is loosing hope, but really what do you expect her to do? Shes been in hiding for a very long time, and things have not gotten any better. I know that if i were a Jew i would have probably given up, The Nazi's did some horrible things in order to get rid of the Jews and i don't think i would've been able to take it. Hearing about so many people deign, maybe even including my friends and relatives, that would be horrible. I agree with you a hundred percent when you say that you disagree with Anne's quote, because I also believe that in life their is always a reason to fight. I understand that life will get hard sometimes, but the darkest hour is only 60 minutes long. Nothing lasts forever. The pain she is going threw right now, it may pay if at the end. With her diary, Anne, let millions of people know what living threw the Holocaust was like. She taught many people to be strong and to never give up. Because even though sometimes she wanted to give up, at the end she didn't. She fought with all her strength to keep her family safe.

  2. I think that by Anne saying how she was "giving up doesn't" necessarily mean that she doesn't care if she lives or dies. Reading the story it's obvious that Anna is a bit of a drama queen, and I think anyone would care if they were going to live or die. Especially if they were being hauled off to a Nazi Death Camp. Jews in hiding obviously still had hope or they would not still be in hiding. Jews in the death camps that woke up everyday and continued working everyday and suffering through still had hope, or else they would have stopped doing what they had to do to live. Although dome Jews did give up hope, Anne and her family stayed in hiding for about 2 years which shows that they had hope of surviving the Holocaust. If they didn't, they could have left hiding.

  4. I agree with you on what Anne was feeling when she said this quote. Anne has obviously suffered too much and has gone trough a lot of things and she has just finally reached her breaking point. Many people in the beginning of the holocaust didn't loose hope because they though that it would just end soon and they would be freed but as time kept passing and things just got worse, people started to loose hope and give up. Many people just thought that it would be better if they just died to end the suffering they were going through. Even though I understand that Anne was going through a very difficult time, She still shouldn't give up her hopes after all she has been through. At the end of something bad there is always something good that will happen. Anne shouldn't give up all her hopes because she would just be showing the Nazis that they win and they have the power. I think Anne was a very strong girl for all the things she went through and she was brave for not loosing her hopes to be free too quickly.

  5. Such a powerful quote you have chosen. It makes my heart hurt each time I read it. Imagine the feeling of the world going on without you when you are afraid and in such pain. Its hard for us to think about Anne giving up when she had shown such strength for so long. We don't really know if something good will come from something so terrible. What do you think Anne might say?
