Think about the terms “help” and rescue.” What is the difference between these two terms? In the context of the Holocaust, how do you understand the difference between these two terms? Can you think of a specific time when help was needed rather than rescue, and of times when Jews needed to be rescued? Would you characterize those individuals who helped Jews as heroes? Why or why not? (Echoes and Reflections)
I think that help and rescue are very similar but are not the same. According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/help, when a person says they need help, it means ¨to give assistance to¨. As far as rescue goes, the site http://www.thefreedictionary.com/help states that it means to ¨To set free, as from danger or imprisonment; save¨. These two definitions are very different in that rescue is more of a heroic thing as help can be given or received from anyone. If a person was helped in the Holocaust they probably received or were given food but if they were rescued they were hidden and given a safe place to stay and given the chance to live a healthy lifestyle. A specific time when help was needed rather that rescue was when Szpilman from the movie The Pianist was found by a German army officer , and the officer started to care for him from a distance and bring him food, but the reason that is not rescue is because the main character Szpilman was already pretty much rescued because he was already living in an abandoned building and all he needed was help getting food. Those who rescued the Jews in my eyes would be considered heroes because without them they would’ve been sent to death camps and concentration camps and their lives would have changed drastically. Do you feel that the act that the people who helped the Jews get out of bad situations like the camps were heroic people ?
Help and rescue are almost similar but they are not the same thing. For example, in the Holocaust rescuing a person would mean taking them away from that event and put them somewhere they are safe no matter what. In the other hand, the word help has a different meaning. If you were to help someone in the Holocaust it would mean that you would do the exact same thing to Anne Frank. Anne was kept in a closet so she would be able to survive during the Holocaust. Even though she was being helped, she was still in danger of getting caught by the German Nazis. The people who were helping her were just keeping her alive for as long as possible. If you were to be rescued you wouldn't have to worry about that problem. These words are very different when explained in the Holocaust. It is important to know the differences because many people were helped for a little, and some were rescued.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting and i agree with you that rescue and help are very similar but they do haave their differences. But it was kinda hard to see the difference for Anne at first.
DeleteI aswell agree that help and rescue are two very similar terms. When the Jews were saved, you could say they were rescued. But offering them food, water, and other supplies could be defined as a helping act. When Anne Frank was being hidden, that could go both ways. She was rescued from being captured and being taken away from the Nazis. But Miep Gies, one of the women who hid her in the attic, didn't have to. She helped her by doing so. Anne Frank considered them as "the helpers". Over all, the definitions of help and rescue are similar, but are aswell two different meanings. Help is to give assitance, and rescue is to set to freedom.
ReplyDeleteHelp and rescue have similar meanings depending the situation. When rescuing an individual your also helping them by placing them in a much safer environment. Anne Frank and her family were helped out by being provided with a roof over her head that helped her and family from getting caught. You can help someone by supporting them but also providing them with goods and such. She didn't always get food or living essential but she did receive a safe place to live but that was enough for her to survive for a curtain period of time. When talking Holocaust rescuing an individual or even a group of people is taking them from a life threatening situation to a safe place. Help and rescue have similar meanings but can differ from each other depending on the situation.
